Update Your Deck

It may be wintertime but you could be daydreaming about updating your deck already...

Why not?

You’ve got the time now to think about it so it’s a good time. There the are some easy tasks you could do that will give your deck the refresh it needs.

Painting the floor is super easy. First, give it a good clean by combining 4 litres of warm water and 250 mls of white vinegar and water in a bucket. If you come across areas that are mildewed spinking baking powder on the area and scrubbing it will clean it right up. When it’s completely dry, paint away! If you are creative, think about painting a pattern. This would save you buying a rug. Or if buy an outdoor rug after you paint. Either way, the floor of the deck will be updated.

Build a bench instead of buying additional seating. Thinking about the making the bench eye catching by painting it a fun colour and adding seating cushions and decorative pillows to the bench. While you’re at it, pick up new outdoor cushions to complete the look.

Build a roof or pergola over your deck. This will give the roof added shade and may give you the feeling that you have added another room to your house. At the very least, you can enjoy your deck in the weather. Make sure gutters are installed to drain water properly and keep the deck and furniture dry.

Add a railing around the deck. A small little white vinyl or wrought iron fence structure will contain the deck and add a place where you can hang items like planters and outdoor lighting. You may even want to consider a gate.

Use an awning or gazebo instead of building a roof structure. Some gazebos even come with built in drapes which would be great for adding shade. Depending on the what you choose, it may be more like a gazebo that goes up in the spring and is taken down in the fall. If you go with an real awning, they are generally attached to your house and are retractable.

Do repairs. You may have loose boards that could cause someone to trip and hurt themselves. If you already have an awning or the like, tighten the screws.
